what is an ideal result or an acceptible level in a tank for healthy fish should this alway be zero my lfs said my danios would survive the cycle and the mrs been unpationed and demanding av had to do kind of a fish cycle my nitrite is zero and nitrate is zero ph is around 7.5 av read in a community tank this should be around seven but higher ph is supposedly to eccellerate the cycle is this true ? amonia test 2.0 is this high should i do a partioal warter change cheers guys

From experience definitely do a fishless cycle.... It is so hard to get the levels down with a fish in and you will have to do daily water changes. You will probably lose a few fish in the process too.

Ammonia will start out high and then nitrites will go high after. All levels should be les than 2.5 before you add any fish.

if you chose to be impatient and add fish before your tank is cycled accept that thay probably will die.

Sorry but I didnt know about fishless cycling until it was too late and am gutted as my frogs have just died after 3 weeks.

Sorry I said all levels i meant nitrite and ammonia.. nitrates arent so important but shouldnt be above 50.

lfs said the fish would survive the cycle got them at the weekend and seem real happy i hope, every feed time they take flakes like pirranas i am feeding with in two mins every thing is gone

Actually the ammonia and nitrite should be 0, any higher and your poisoning your fish, nitrates should be below 40

How long has the tank been setup and how long have the danios been present in the tank?

as you are doing a fish in cycle you need to be prepared to do a lot of water changes to keep the toxins diluted to the minimum possible level. I would reccomend starting with 25% water changes every other day, during this time keep an eye on the parameters (nitrite and ammonia) if they continue to rise even with the 25%WC's you may need to increase them to every day.

Danios are probably the best choice for doing fish in cycles so hopefully you'll be lucky

the big problem with fish-in cycling is laziness. i'm not calling anyone in particular lazy but i feel i should point out that fish-in cycling isn't bad for the fish if done right.

the trick is to test frequently and be willing to do water changes immediately if ammonia or nitrIte is above .25. NitrAte, if i remember correctly, is safe up to 100 in some cases but shouldn't be allowed above 30-40. Fish-in cycling is generally prefered here on this forum because most people are not capable of doing this because of a variety of reasons from work schedules to outright negligence.

Oh and danios, ime, are deffinitely the best for fish-in cycling as Davo has said.

Good luck :good:
