I'm helping a friend set up her tank because she's not to be trusted to do it herself and i'd like to do a fishless cycle because from what ive read it sounds a much better plan than damaging the poor fishes...anyway, I didnt do one with my tank because when i set it up I hadn't heard of fishless cycling.

thus i need to go get some ammonia. does anyone know how much it'll take? vaguely? it would be much easier if i knew roughly how much of what concentration would suffice. ta :)

of course, if I'd put the size of the tank it might have been more useful

I was kinda planning on "borrowing" some from my mum's workplace. I'll take a small bottle with me.

Even if you have a huge tank, a single small bottle will more than suffice. I'd have to consult my notes, but the last time i fishless cycled i believe i was adding about 1/2 a teaspoon per day to take the levels up to 5ppm. Just make sure that the ammonia is pure, or diluted with only water. Don't use ammonia that has perfumes, dyes, or detergents in it. If you shake the bottle and it foams, find a different brand.

it'll be pure, I'm getting it from a school science department where they use pure ammonia for crazy experiments. thanks for the info! :)

since the strengths of ammonia vary be sure to not add too much if you're using a high grade.
