quick question guys/girls .... how does water + salt = ammonia ??? i dont understand how just water and sea salt can cause ammonia and then how it can just suddenly drop. also is it harmful to humans if you are in the same room as the fishtank for 15 hours a day

water + salt should not equal ammonia... If it does, you've got a problem. Got more details?

No, it's fine to be in the same room as the tank.

i just researched a little more and its the fish waste than makes ammonia wich turns into niterite.... but i am doing a fisless cycle and people keep saying check your ammonia and nitrate, nitrate levels... but how is that possible if i have no fish in there ? thats why i figured it must be the salt lol

Lol, it's not possible unless there's a source of decay for nitrates. Why are you doing a fishless cycle? Are you planning on doing Fish Only? Will you use Live Rock?

ah ok lol so all i need to do is test the salt/gravity before i add live rock and fish and maybe the PH. i am going to have fish and live rock. maybe coral too if i can find out what lighting etc i need for coral and if its not too pricey. is it possible to add live rock without the salt in the water ? at the moment my tank is filled with tap water wich im going to let distill for a few days then add some salt. but if living rock can survive in freshwater i might add some tommorow as the lfs only had a tiny bit left so it will be gone by the time i have the salt settled into the water. i know the living rock can surivive anywhere inside or outside the tank because it is dead but i dont want to put it in a frshwater tank and have it kill all the little hitchhikers on it. so probally best waiting til i have the salt and hope he has some in stock soon

Lol, ok back the truck up a bit :). I'm gonna suggest that you have a read through the stickies atop this section before proceeding too much further. Live Rock cannot, I repeat, cannot survive in freshwater. Make SURE the water is mixed for at least 24 hours with appropriate amounts of salt before adding LR

no i meant it cant die because it is dead... only the hitchhikers will die... but some crabs, snails etc do live in freshwater so i wasnt 100% sure. but then again it is possible to get a hitch hiking star fish on live rock so i will wait til the salt is in for a day or 2 and at the right level

Live Rock is "live" because it is covered in beneficial bacteria, calcerous algaes, sponges, tunicates, microinvertebrates, snails, bristleworms, bristlestars, feather dusters, other filter feeders, and plenty more beneficial organisms. All of which will die if exposed to either freshwater or air for too long. LR and the organisms on it are far from indestructible...

yup thats what i meant the hitchikers on it are live but not the actual rock, though some snails can live in freshwater... thats why i asked

shouldnt you be using RO water? if i were you i would be doing a little more research! seems your rushing into it a bit!

she said she was doin fowlr and maybe a coral, fowlr is fine with tap water and most softies are fine with it, i just didnt see them say anything about dechlorinator.

that being said ro water really is advisable in all cases...

yup i used dechlorinator. after a few days the chloring will have gone anyway... i have nothing to transport the water from the lfs so i just used tap water and let it settle for a week or 2 before i get some living rock. tap water is pretty much harmless once its distilled. its used in tattoing to cut the ink to make shading ink ( once the water is distilled ) so cant see any reason it cant be cut with salt for the aquariam. been using tap water for years with tropical fish and never had any problems and since the tank will empty for a few weeks it should be fine, i will do all the tests before i put live rock in anyway

you have your own distillery?

I really think you should spend at least 1-2 months of research, you dont seem to know enough (not saying your stupid, everyone was in your position once) to start successfully.

What salt are you using?

Why buy live rock if you are going to kill the life in freshwater lol, the hitchhikers is the life, you kill all of them you dont have live rock, then you just wasted a lot of money.

Other things i must add:
Saltwater is very different from freshwater tanks, tap water may be alright for freshwater but sometimes not for saltwater.
Saltwater is very different than tattoo ink
Distilled water is pure, not tap water that has just sat there.
