Hi everyone,
my mother used to be a hairdresser and used ammonia in her work. She wanted me to pass on this health and safety warning to you all, since ammonia is frequently used in fishless cycling:
Please remember to use dilute ammonia as concentrated ammonia is deadly, even if all you do is inhale the fumes. 10% ammonia should not be too dangerous.
Please use ammonia in a well ventilated space.
Please do not sniff ammonia as this may damage your nose or lungs.
If you spill ammonia, immediately flood the area with water and open all windows.
If you are a child, only use ammonia with adult supervision.
If you believe you have inhaled or accidently drank ammonia, call paramedics immediately and make sure they are aware that you have inhaled or ingested ammonia.
It's not just ammonia: The same rules apply to white spirit, or methylated spirit or various glues or brush cleaners. So remember, be careful and be safe!
