Ammonia Levels?

Okay, I started a 55 gal cichlid tank eight days ago with starter fish. The LFS told me to start with eight fish. I guess my question is how high should I restrict the ammonia(um) levels while I cycle of the tank? I haven't really seen it get over 1.0 but have read on the net that .25 is too high. If this is true, how can I lower the levels without prolonging the cycle? The only problem I have seen is a change in color of my red zebra.

The parameters are:

pH=8.0 (dolomite and Texas holy rock keep levels high)
Hardness= 120 ppm
Buffering capacity=180 ppm
ammonia=1.0 ppm
nitrite=1.0 ppm
nitrate=?(I assume very little if any being converted now)

I just completed the first water change of 30% and added declorinator yesterday, but did not see a dramatic change in the ammonia levels.

When ever i set up a new tank, i use gold fish to get the cycle going. :lol:
Very hardy and very tested. :sly:
What other fish could live in a plastic bag on a fair ground stall, lol. :hyper:
But if you have other tanks like i do, use old media from pumps to start new tank off. :p

kitkat,

Please list the fish and their sizes you have in the tank.

You should strive for the following levels:

Ammonia - 0

Nitrites - 0

Nitrates - below 10ppm

You mentioned having a red zebra. I am assuming your LFS informed you these are cichlids, Mbuna to be exact and are not the best fish to cycle a tank with!!!

One thing to keep in mind is that Ammonia has a greater affect with higher pH levels.

You should be able to use on Ammonia treatment in your tank to protect the fish during the cycling, there are several to choose from.
Do a search for Ammonia removers and you will find some, or go to your local pet store.

I always cycle my tanks with dispensable (cheap) fish.....

Good luck!
