Went to the lfs yesterday (I think they start rubbing their hands every time I go in the store ;) ) and saw a white stone in a sealed packet costing about 3.50. It claims to trap ammonia in its microscopic complex pathways. Definately didn't buy it I'm always dubious of these quick fix methods they usually create more hardship in the long run. Thinking about it unless it chemically traps it the ammonia will just diffuse back into the water and if it does miraculously suck the ammonia in won't it leak back out when its full???

Anyone used one of these?

Still think I'll stick to other methods for this.

That would probably be zeolite. However, in a fully cycled tank it can be useful as it soaks up phosphates - phosphates are major causes of algae. I believe you have to re-charge it periodically by soaking it in salt water.

It may be useful for getting rid of ammonia in a cycling tank with fish but there is the problem of it leaching back into the water, of course, and it won't do a thing for nitrite.
