I just cleaned the glass in my tank removing the algae from it and removed some hair algae which was growing on the LR with a toothbrush. I also removed a bit of the gravel as it looked like there was to much.

Anyway shortly after I done my tests and the ammonia is up to 0.5 from 0. Is it possible that remove the algae and disturbing the gravel that it has dislodged bits that has caused this to go up.

What should I do, I have some water mixing but its not going to be ready to do the change until tomorrow, will it be ok until then?

Might be from removing gravel.
Water change ASAP, water mixing will be fine. Ammonia at 0.5 could result in death to any livestock in there.

Ok thanks, could I change the water tonight? how long should I leave the salt mixing for before adding it to the tank?

what do you mean water mixing?

just add dechlor to tap water of a similar temp and get it in quick.....

Usually you let the water "mix" so things like the ph stabalize. Just make sure all the salt is dissolved and use it now. Ammonia is extremely toxic to livestock.

Ok thanks, will wait up until it has dissolved and put it in.

Im just re testing now as I tested almost straight after cleaning so it may have dopped, fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help :) will let you know how I get on in about 10mins when the test has finished

ok just re tested and now its showing as 0, is that even possible..!!!!

could the scrubbong of the live rock with a toothbrush have killed some organisms on the rock?
long shot, but just a thought...

i have seen this before when make up salt water
i used to mix and leave to stand with an air stone
and heater in it was normally read to use the next day
with no ammonia reading

As Ben, said, its much more likely to be a false reading, something went wrong when you tested, maybe something got dropped in the test kit, dont worry - its all good now
