Hey people, Ive been after some information regarding American Flag Fish. Wat temperature do the like best? Wat fish do they mix in well with? Just the usual questions. I didnt want to the them at this time of year but no one around my area stocks them so i decided to buy 4 of them just for starters. Any information would be appriatated.

Jordanella floridae - I've kept them as community fish before - no problems. They like a bit of greenery to munch on

Check out these three pages, for pics and breeding reports.

I never bothered breeding them - but quite a few killi keepers like them - although they are seen in aquarium shops so often here, a lot of the serious killi heads stick to rarer stuff

They're often called Florida flagfish, so do a search under than name as well. They do indeed come from Florida (hence the name) so can be treated as subtropical to tropical fish.

As 4ftguppy mentions, they do eat soft plants. In fact, they prefer algae, and algae is the key to getting bright colours. Males are territorial, but not overly so, and in a big tank these are easy fish to keep in groups. Do well in freshwater or low end brackish. They aren't annuals, and should live for 3-4 years, at least.

Cheers,

Neale

I have kept them in the past, but to be honest I too regarded them as a little mundane compared to other more challenging species. Pretty easy to breed and a diverse spawning habit. Mine made a little hollow at the rear of the tank and spawned and behaved much like in the manner of small cichlids.
Below is a more concise link as to their husbandry and breeding habits.
