Hi,

My local pet store is stocking Amano Shrimp. I wanted to get a couple for interest value and also to help clean up debris. Do I need to cater for them any differently - i.e. do they need any kind of rock or cave coverage for hiding / sleeping?

Amano Shrimp are relatively delicate and will not tolerate the majority of medications that are available being added to your tank, especially Copper. There are also a lot of fish that will look upon them as dinner.

Mine are kept in a softwater tank with a pH of 6.4 and are very happy.

They make a really interesting addition to my tank and are great to watch when they are stealing food from my Corys.

For more information, ask a few questions on the invertibrate section of this forum.

I wolndt take that too literally. My amano shrimp have been through MEth Blue, Melafix and Fungal treatments in the past with no problems.

Yes, I have heard of them surviving certain treatments no problem, but so long as Steerpike is aware of their intolerance to some.

I had a heater problem a few weeks back... ie NO heat for nearly a week, 20 degrees F drop from normal temp... only one MIA ! So they must be tougher than they say !

I believe a lot of Amano Shrimp are found in cooler streams.
