As if I wasn't having enough problems with my fish, one of my largest, oldest Amano shrimp was found today on the carpet next to my tank.
It's a covered tank and has a hood. It's the type with glass at the top with a gap in the middle covered by sliding glass doors. I think I know how it got out... there are two small gaps in the glass at the top of the tank (one at each back corner) for filter outlets and intakes etc. and through one of the gaps I was running an airstone. The top of the airstone was slightly out of the water, so I think the shrimp must have climbed up the top of the airstone and then shimmied down the airline all the way to the floor! I have no idea how long it was out of the tank, but the carapace was dry to the touch. As soon as I saw it I grabbed a jugful of tank water and popped the shrimp straight in so that I could keep an eye on it. At first it sank upside-down to the bottom, but it's legs were moving and it soon righted itself and started swimming on and off. Sometimes stopping at the bottom of the jug. But once it became aware that it was in a confined area (within a couple of minutes) the shrimp became distressed and swam erratically round in circles, bumping into the walls of the jug. So I decided to put it back in the tank where it would feel safe.
I think I may have caught it in time to save it, but I don't know that much about how long shrimp can survive outside of water. Anyone got any ideas? What are my Amano's chances of survival?
