If you have nano fish like green neons, pygmy corydoras ot cardinal tetras, do not get amano shrimp. They will kill your fish while they are sleeping. People say that amano shrimp only attack dying fish. Sleeping fish look like dying fish to them. A group of 5 amano shrimp could kill about 10 of your nanao fish their first night in your aquarium. They are evil.

I've only had amanos with nano fish. No issues from them.

you sure theyre Amano shrimp and not ghosts?

I know Amano may take fry... and ghosts will take what they can catch too... but ghosts are more omnivores than amanos are

I read some articles that actually shrimps will attack small fish if they can especially their fry.
I think though shrimps generally don't attack fish but there are times that they may attack them especially when they are sleeping.
I guess all animals are unpredictable.
Just my thought.

Ah, are your amanos really amanos or are they macrobrachium?

The difference between these two is amanos really don’t attack healthy small fish or other shrimps but macrobrachium are predatory.

The two shrimps do look very similar when macros are young and about the same size as amanos, but macros eventually grow much, much bigger when adults.

The main difference between the two is their two front arms, amanos have short arms and macros have much longer arms.

Have a look at the two pictures below, (taken from generic pictures online).

The first is an amano shrimp

The second is an macrobrachium, note the front arms are about twice the length of amanos arms or about the same length as it’s own body.

This does happen and they do get sold in lots of LFS as it’s very hard to tell the difference between the two species at first glance but study them closer and you’ll see subtle differences.

Might help if you can take a good picture of one of your shrimps and enlarge the picture to try and help to see if you can spot the difference in the arms lengths.

I was looking at Amanos yesterday in PAH. They’re in with endlers. When looking at em anywhere in future I’ll look a bit more closely.
Thanks Charlie and OP.
There’s certainly a lot more to learn than last time around when Amanos were known as Japonicas and the lfs just sold you whatever you enquired about in whatever sized tank you had that was filled with whatever water you had. Though to be fair they did ask if it was heated...

The photo you posted first is a ghost shrimp, not amano. Ive got them. Amanos have a shape different than ghosts, theyre shaped more like larger neos, but are transparent

Oh yeah, so they are! Oops!

Been a while since had amanos and ghosts shrimps I forgot about that!

Anyhow, it’s exactly the same difference really, it’s the fact that macros have long arm with pincers that’s about the length of their bodies is the distinctive difference to tell apart the different specie.

Here’s a fully grown adult

I don't know because I got rid of them. They even bred in my aquarium and I had to get rid of the baby. Since Then, my aquarium has slowly been coming back to life. The culprits would be pzes.es. In Spain people are such slackers. They don't care what they sell. Therefore, I was sold shrimp that a Spanish slacker felt like selling me. It's not surprising. I hate living in this socialist/communist country.
