they should eat most types of algae, though I think mainly the green; their diet also should include other things, e.g. algae wafers, shrimp pellets, etc

My amanos have done a wonderful job on cleaning up the long hairs of ?thread algae in my tank. Before getting them, I was in there twice a week winding long threads around a toothbrush to get them out; now I haven't touched it for 2 weeks and the tank looks great. Hey, there were plants under there!
The shrimp pellets give them calcium that they need to keep their shells in good shape, as well as extra protein ('cause I don't think if algae has a lot of protein). I regularly drag plants from my fish tanks that have gone algaeic into the shrimp tanks and in 2 weeks, the plants are clean and ready to go back in with the fish. Like taking the car to the car wash (um, except slower).
