I have a 20 gallon high aquarium with a breeding pair of peacock gudgeons and was wondering after a visit to the pet store whether or not I should do ghost shrimp or amano.... While I was there they had a 3 for $1 deal on ghost shrimp but I passed because I wasnt sure about diseases and aggression... Right now my two fish are a little over an inch and I dont want to wake up to a ghost shrimp munching on my fish cause I have heard that they can eat small fish I think... But I do like amano because they eat all sorts of algae and fungus as well as clean up leftover fish food... I'm sure ghost shrimp also do some of those things but I want to know what I'm doing before purchasing one... Thank you for any help!

Thank you!! This will help me a ton!

Amanos, for sure...ghost shrimp are raised as feeders, primarily...many health issues/overbred...and you may get other shrimp mixed in that are indeed aggressive

Yah I'm glad I didnt get the ghost shrimp... They could be an aggressive species and I dont want my fish to die due to a cheap shrimp 😅

Yah I'm willing to spend a dollar or two more to play it safe...

I always keep ghost shrimp around. even in my fry tanks! I don't think there's room to worry about them getting munchy.:)

I just dont want to accidentally get the wrong species and then my fish die... You may have gotten lucky with a certain species but I dont want to get UNlucky with it lol

wait since amanos are caridinia can they breed with crystals

Amanos and crystal shrimps are different species. They even reproduce differently.

Amanos are Caridina multidenta; crystals are Caridina cantonensis.
Amano eggs hatch to planktonic larvae which need brackish water to develop; crystal eggs hatch to miniature adults which do not need brackish water.

There is a chart which shows which shrimps will or can interbreed. It's on a website which no longer exists but we can access it via Wayback Machine (so it takes a bit longer to load). This page contains a simplified chart and a link to a pdf with a more comprehensive chart.

(Note that the website does use the old name for cherry shrimp. They are now Neocaridina davidi)
