Hi everyone,

been looking online and on this forum for diy yeast setups, i see you need 2ltr bottle, yeast, sugar etc. I have however seen that some people just connect there 2ltr bottle to a bubble counter and then a diffuser in there tank and some run there 2ltr bottle into a small bottle of water and then run it to there diffuser.

Am i right in saying you have to run the 2ltr bottle mix into a small bottle of just water to dissolve the alcohol that the process makes?

Any help is greatly received
Thanks

The main reason for having a second small bottle, 1/3 filled of water, is to count the bubbles. This is to ensure you're not under or over dosing (more critical on a nano).

The second, and equally important reason, is to prevent the main mixture frothing up into the tank - like a safe guard.

And the most important thing.. If you are connecting it to the end of a powerhead, use a non return valve otherwise the tank will syphon out into the bottles which will in turn suck up the mixture into your tank = dead fish. I'd recommend using one anyway just to be sure. Use this between the bubble counter and tank.

Good luck and if you have any more Q's, please ask.

oh yeah, that'd make for an excellent episode of This old Fish Tank..

going to get to work on this project since I had to abort my live blood worm experiment due to pollen..

Great glad i asked best to double check.

I have got a glass diffuser with chcek valve built in and a glass bubble counter from tank scape (not sure if im aloud to drop names) all i need is to drink lots of lemonade and get my bottles sorted. ha ha ha.

thanks for the advice great forum.

cheers Tav

A nice arrangement to prevent tank water contamination is to place an empty bottle between the 2 litre and the tank. Do not extend the outlet tubing far into the intermediate bottle and you will have room for a spill to be contained short of ending up in the tank. That can be important to the fish although, if you catch it early enough, a water change will take care of the fish in most cases.
