i have lots of big fish in my tank and lots of them

tank size 84inch long x 32inch wide x 30inch deep

filters

2 x eheim pro 3 1700 lph each
2 x eheim pro 3e 1850 lph each
2 x eheim 2252 internal filters 1200 lph each

i also have 2 x blagoon pond buckets which are used on one of the intake pipes on both pro 3 this gives you a massive sponge filter much bigger than a FX5 each pond bucket is good enought for a 3000g pond

this gives me a total tank turn over of 9500 lph

is this enought

do you still have the nitrate filter going?
do they work im thinking about getting one

Not too much.... keep in mind that the output of a filter will be lower with media and pipework.

I have a pro 3 2076 and in the instructions eheim state that with the reccomended media the flow drops from 1650lph to 1000lph.

I am concerned that you have the sponge filter on only ONE of TWO inlets on both of your pro 3's. In this case the water will take the path of least resistance and go through the inlet with no sponge... rendering them useless.

You would be better off without them... or put them on the 2078's - be warned that they will infere with the auto functions when clogged though.

IMHO the internals should not be needed.

Do you have shares in Eheim? :hyper:

i had to take the sand filter and nitrate reactor off because of bad health i chouldnt get in to maintain them they make the ph drop so unless you do 2 water changes per week the ph will go real low if you use sulpha beads if you feed it with alchol and siporex it may work better but i chould be asked feeding the reactor

they do work they brought my nitrates down from 1800ppm to 50ppm

1800ppm must be a nitrate record
i didnt know test kits even went that high

i think the top is 160ppm and it was darker than that

the way i see it is if your nitrates are high and the rest of the tests are fine then your filters are doing their job

Do you have some pics of the tank...?

Also... did you see what i wrote above re having a filter on only one exit of each pro 3... you're doing yourself a disservice that way...!

i dont understand what you mean

the pro3 2080 has 2 intake pipes you take 1 to the pond bucket 1st then to the pro 3 then it acts like a massive pre filer sponge filter just like a fx5 the 2nd intake pipe you take direct to the pro3 like normal this way the pro3 still gets plenty of tank water bacteria

i have been running my tank like this for 2yrs now and it works great so the reason you say its not good is

Fine... but water will always take the path of least resistence - so you are not getting as much out of the pond prefilter as you could... you are basically setting up a giant bypass.

the beneficial bacteria in your tank are those which are cultured on the hard surface of the filter media. relatively small numbers of beneficial bacteria are borne on the water column itself...

the pond bucket is higher than the pro3 and the water flow comes out of both intake pipes at the same speed

A pic might clear it up...?

The pond bucket is a foam filter? Attached to the inlet? Surely it must exert some form os resistence over and above the normal intake strainer?
