Before I joined here I never knew that you could get bottles of ammonia... and I think I'm the only one, so lets just say I feel a bit silly now.

So at the minuet I'm buying these tiddly little bottles of de-chlorinater for my tank and I'm useing at least one bottle a week 'cause I have the fry tank to do as well. And the price of it is quickly starting to add up. So I was wondering, of you can get big wacking bottles of ammonia, can you get big bottles of de-chlorinater as well? Have I been paying a small fortune for no reason? : /

And if so, firstly, where would I get it from? Chemist? And second, is there anything that I should be avoiding in it that could harm my Fishies?

No, you are not being stupid. I to found de-chlorinator expensive, doing 30 gallon water changes on my 100 gallon tank. The problem is that aquatic stores, being specialist suppliers, think they can charge whatever they want for products. If you have a local Wilkonsons you can get a bottle of de-chlorinator for £2.70 and it treats approx 200 gallons of water, great value for money me thinks. :good:

Nope, no local Wilconsons. I don't have much round where I live to be honest and I can't travel. I do have a Boyes, but they're only small. Would they do it? I've never noticed any before, where would it be? In the cleaning bit?

See, my tank is only a 20 gallon but I live off benefits due to my disabilities so the price of these little bottles can add up to be a lot for someone like me, even for a small tank like that, plus the fry tank too. And I do think the price is a bit steap anyway for what it is : /

Is there not a non-Fish version of the same thing? I can imagine it would be cheaper is all.

I have never seen a none fish version. There is an alternative. Make up a bag of carbon (an old tight is ideal), run your tap water into a bucket, and leave it with the carbon in over night. After 24hrs the chlorine will have dicipated, the carbon will have dealt with any chloromine and the water will be safe to use.

You could buy some Seachem Prime. It seems a bit pricey at first, but it is great value for money as you only need a little to dechlorinate a large tank. It's one capful (5ml) for 200l of water. One bottle will last much longer than let's say the P@H stuff.

I agree with what Salam said... Seachem prime is excellent value for money..each water change i do i add 4/5 drops to each 20 Litre bucket of fresh water that i add... i have a large bottle that has been with me for over a year now.

I was confused " I never knew that you could get bottles of ammonia" and then we talked "de-chlorinater"...

In the us a 500ml bottle of Seahem Prime is about $12 in local store, full shelf.. I have read a bit about a online blockade in the UK but not up to date on that

Edit: give me a few and I see the post for what it is.. my bad but will let the rest stand.

It is possible to get larger bottles of most dechlorinators. The best prices are likely to be found online, but if you talk to your LFS, they should be able to order in larger bottles. For example, a 500 ml bottle of one dechlorinator that I just saw cost 18 pounds and would treat 20,000 US gallons of water.

This Seachem Prime stuff sounds good. I'll have a lookie-see for that.

My petshop can only get the little bottles in 'cause it's the only thing their supplier gets in. They're only a little shop too so I think that might be one reason why they get the little ones in... but it's probably good for monies too.

It's a shame you can't get big bottles of it like you can the ammonia. But I'll have a look into this Seachem stuff since it sounds a much better deal than what I'm using. I've heard of it being used by lots of people on here too.

Ta muchly : )

Sorted.

Ta for the link. I can't buy anything off Ebay unfortunatly, but I think I've found it at the same price on Seapets and I've used them a few times so I know they're good : ) I think I can get the API test kit off there too, so that's even better!

I use 500ml bottles of Seachem Prime and they last forever on my 60L tank. However, due to politics you won't find it on eBay or Amazon so you might have to do a little digging online. Definitely worth it though. 5ml treats 200L. Highly concentrated stuff!

Seachem Prime is available in a 20 litre bottle (treats 166,535 gallons), Tetra AquaSafe is available in 5 litre bottles (treats 2,200 gallons), etc. How much bigger do you want? :)

Ok, just to make it clear ;p

Seachem have stopped the selling their product on Ebay & Amazon. That is why you cannot find it, or if you can its at a mad price.

Try these links,

Loads more dealers out there, Google is your friend.

Seapets do the different sizes of bottles, I think including the big ones. Doesn't seem to be a bad price either. I'll be ordering it off there next week along with my API kit.

Why have they taken themselves off ebay and Amazon? Seems a bit mad to take yourself off possably the two most popular product sites on the web!

Anyway, for those who haven't ordered off Seapets before they're very good. Lots on their site, the delivery is relitivly quick and everything is always well packaged. They're a big fan on bubblewrap! But here's the link to the Seachem for you to see...
