sam

fished this out -any good?

Altolamprologus - Tanganyika. Smaller races (A. compressiceps "Dwarf, Shell" ) can be kept as small as a 10 gallon tank, the rest (A. calvus "Black", A. compressiceps , etc...) are in the 20+ tank range. In all types, the females are about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the males. Shells are an essential decoration in tanks housing these fish, as the females often take refuge deep inside them where the males are too large to reach. These fish feed on invertebrates, although there have been many reports that they will also consume small fish, such as Cichlid fry. These fish are very aggressive towards each other, although they tend to leave other tankmates alone. They usually form pairs and spawn in the shells, although they may practice polygamy if an excess of females is present in the tank.

"These are both nice fish. Keep in mind however they do best in pairs or trios"
are you tryin to hussle me???lol j/k ;)
ok since there must be or should be atleast 3 can i count my calvus or alto.comp?? if not will they get along in a 29g or a 30g??

thanx again guy's

Altolamprologus calvus yellow pearly
you guy's have anything on him

They will do quite nicely in a 29 gallon. I have a very rare pair of WILD black congo black ventral calvus in a 15 gallon and they are breeding like rabbits.

In fact most of the wilds I get in I keep seperated in pairs in 15 gallon tanks.

You don't need 3. A pair will get along nicely provided they have adequate shells and rockwork.

The shells are for the female to retreat to and lay her eggs in. The shell should be just big enough for the female to aalmost fit in. This way she will deposit her eggs, the male will fertilize them and she will guard the opening to keep the male out so he don't eat the eggs.

I know, your saying well how can she retreat to the shell if she can't get all the way in? Well she just does...take my word for it.

well i have a crapload of shells, are there anymore dwarf species that will do well in my setup??
n.pulcher
n.nigrivenrtus(spelling??)
calvus(black)
alto comp (gold)

WILD black congo black ventral calvus
how bout this one??
got a pic?

I'll try to get some pics of these by the weekend.

These are a bit darker than the congo black calvus and have black ventral fins.

Very high in demand right now. I believe I was one of a handful of people in Michigan to first get them.

Very expensive and worth every penny. If you have the tank space I can get F1 fry of most any calvus/comp available.

You would need to grow these out and as I am sure you know these are VERY SLOW growers.

I also currently have F1 fry of the Altolamprologus comp. Mutondwe Island. Another rare comp.

As you might figure out, calvus and comps are one of my favorite fish.

Lets jump up to one of your previous posts, Most

When I made referrence to "them doing best in Prs./Trios" I meant of their own kind.

I would be very concerned placing any more single comps/calvus in the 29 gallon.

You risk crossbreeding and heightened aggression.

Do you know what the sexes are of your calvus/comp you currently have?

I also would not recommend placing a pr/trio of say yellows or dwarfs in with the two single species due to all kinds of trouble possibly happening.

While some say calvus and comps will not cross, I find that hard to believe unless given mates of their own kind.

So if you have one of each sex between the calvus and comp you have chances are, once mature they may very well indeed crossbreed.

Hope this answered some of your questions.

that about answers most of my questions, ;)
ok this is the deal, this weekend i'm gonna help my friend setup a 20g tank and i'll be giving him my rams(they're kinda :look: boring)imo.and i'll be giving away my angels cos well :/ not that they are boring but i'm just not interested in them and i fugured angels would maybe get my girlfriend into the hobby WRONG!!!.Back to my point,i'll most likely have a spare 30g which i'd like to use as another african setup. :D
So CM you gotta school me some on these dwarf tang cichlids(i'll be picking your brain some)if you don't mind?

N.nigriventris
any idea where i can find another one of these,i think mine is a male and i'm looking for a female.
i'll proly have to special order one :S

I think Armkes may sell them. They are somewhat hard to come by which is why I suggested you keep it way back when.

I will look around and see if I can locate any from my end though.

Your gonna love this...nigriventris is somewhat aggressive towards females and introducing a single female into a 29 gallon tank may result in her early demise.

Suggestion...get several and once they pai up sell the remaining ones off, or keep them to help diffuse any aggression.

Just a note: It has been my experiance that any of the Tanganyikans that have a body shape such as the nigriventris, leleupi and so on do lean towards aggression towards females of their kind. Always a better option to get groups of these, raise them up and sort out the survivors.

Chalinochromis - hails from Lake Tanganyika. Similar to Julidochromis. They are a micro predator, and monogamous substrate spawners. 20 gallons + is usually adequate. They are pretty peaceful

ok it say they are "pretty"peaceful and 20g would be enuff room,so in your opinion is it enuff room for it AND others or 20g per.

 i really like this one :fun:

and if it's ok w/tankmates will they do well w/the dwarf altos in a 30g

Well never mind then

i keep forgeting that breeding is a totally different world, and that world  i'm just not ready for. :p As far as fish are concerned atleast
