Is there another (cheaper) brand of filter that makes cartridges that will fit in a penguin (125 and 170)? I would love to find a foam cartridge or at least a carbonless one. I know I could cut out the filter media and dump out the carbon, which I might do rather than changing the cartridge each month, but wondered if there are other options?

Measure the inside, & find an Aquaclear foam block that is the right size or slightly bigger. If it's a little big, trim it down & wedge it in there. If you fit it right you can get some floss and use the sides of the foam to hold the floss, kind of like an opside down U of floss.

Wow Big Al's is cheap!! I paid almost that much for half as many cartridges at the lfs. Gosh I miss pets.com and their coupons. :(

you really dont need to replace carts' evey month gale, i rinse mine off about every 4 wks and only repalce when they fall apart...i rinse um in the summer with hose out side, i never rinse w/aquiraium water like they say ya should.. u can get then cleaner with hose..and my tanks are fine i run all peunguins...there is enough good bacteria on the surfaces in tank..dont worry..

I've been told here that carbon cartridges do have to be replaced about once a month because the carbon begins to leach chemicals back into the water. I also read that I could cut the fiber and dump out the carbon, then keep using the cartridge. I might do that or at least I know about it in case I run out of filter cartridges.

I also rince my penguine filter when it looks like it's a bit messy and I usually replace the filter once the carbon is almost gone. Although this up coming filter change I plan on doing what you suggested keeping the filter and just toping up the carbon. Fish keeping shouldn't put you out of house and home if you do it right.

Goto Wal Mart and pick up the cartidges for their Regent Aqua-Tech series filters. They are manufactured in the same factory and the catridges are identical.

The size for your 125 will be the 10-20. I'm not sure what size you need for your 170 (might be the 20-40 size???)
