I would like to have at least 4 almano shrimps in my new set-up but I have been told that my water is too soft, they wont be able to form new shells after a moult, my water comes from a supply up on Exmore at Porlock, I went on the water supply company web site and got this.
Total hardness values expressed in carrying units (for the last calendar year)

Calcium (milligrams per litre) 15

Calcium carbonate (milligrams per litre) 48

Degrees Clark 3.36

Degrees German (ºdH) 2.688

Degrees French (ºf) 4.8

Is the water too soft ? + there are NO nitrates in the water as there is no farming only sheep & Deer & ponys.

2.6 dH is REALLY LOW. You generally shouldn't have lower than 3 dH with shrimp, as yes, they can't develope new shells. You should consider checkerboard cichlids, as they do best in extremely soft water.

It's possible to get additives to raise the hardness if you're really keen on keeping them, though I think this is something of a chore as it can be hard to keep it balanced. I've not done it myself.

My water is really soft and I keep amano shrimp and they appear to be just fine. I don't know exactly how soft it is off the top of my head though.
