My girlfriend has a coldwater tank and its been stocked with alot of fish which have all died, when one dies another goes in a few days later and sure enough eventually dies!

My question is, im currently cycling a tropical tank, does the coldwater tank need to cycle in a simialr way? For example is the ammonia killing them like it would tropical fish? Sorry if these questions are simple but we were told by the lfs that they should live fine.... :/

Help is appreciated

Cheers

Yes the filter needs to cycle exactly the same.
How many fish where there in what size tank?
and how long was it set up for?
and what sort of filtration, GPH etc?

Its the same as cycling a tropical tank, though it might take longer as the water is colder. A good idea to get it started is to add a heater and get the temp to 24c and the bugs will colonise the filter quicker. Another way is to use media from another filter to get the new filter going quicker. If a tanks temperature is really low then the cycle will stop altogether.

Thanks mate, feel a bit stupid now but like a say it was what the lfs told use, no wonder they have all died, my tropical tank is still cycling and its been up for bout 4 weeks now, poor fish.........

Many pet stores dont know how to house goldies properly but the general rule is 15 gallons for small singletailed types and that grows as the fish grows. A full sized goldie can reach over a foot long and need at least 50 gallons for itself.
A fancy isnt as fast and need the same room so 10 gallons per fish rising to 20 as it gets to full size will be needed.
As well as plenty of water space, a good filter with plenty of media on it is needed as well.
Dont feel silly about asking questions, we all start somewhere and build on the knowledge to keep our fish healthy.
