I'm looking into buying a new, more powerful external filter for my 240ltr tank.

I have come across these line of filters and there VERY reasonable indeed.

Does/has anyone have any experience with these filters as they look too good to be true to me!

I'm currently drooling over the 1400 EF+ right now

I want 1

I'd heard bad reviews about them but one came with the second had tank I bought so i thought I'd give it a go.

So far so good - been using it two months now and not had any problems. Easy to clean and beer had any problems with it that weren't user problems.

I have been using one for over a year and apart from requireing a replacement head (that was sent out quickly by APS) the filter has not missed a beat. You will hear mixed reviews on APS but my experiance has been good.

I would take the flow rate quoted with a pinch of salt, expect the actual flow rate to be about half of what the filter is rated at.

I've saw some threads on here about them and not too much negative talk so far.

Regarding flow. Would it be an idea going for the 2000 lph for my 240ltr tank or would that be overkill. I currently have an ehime pro which is 800lph and its nowhere near as powetfull as I would like it to be.

I know once media is accounted for that my 800lph would prob drop to around 600lph. I was hoping for something at least around 1000lph (after added media).

Only seen one before and took one look at it and could tell what make it was (despite never having seen one before) just because it looked so cheap and flimsy and the owner had had nothing but problems with it from the start.

Personally I wouldnt touch one with a bargepole.

I like their internal filters alot but I have a tetratec ex1200 in my main which is amazing. It runs alongside an internal APS 1200 lph.

I'm opposite to MBOU on this (sorry, MBOU!)

I originally bought the 1400lph model as my first external filter (for a four foot, 180l tank) and was so happy with it, I upgraded all my big tanks to the 2000lph version over the next few months.

The first one is still going strong after getting on two years now, and I'm very happy with them. Do go for the 2000lph one though; the flow rate on those is about 1200lph, without a spray bar but full of media.

*puts hand on heart* I'm insulted Flutter!! :p

Each to their own eh! :)

MBOU voicing their opinions again lol lol

OP the APS filters are excellent, I would go with the 2000l/hr one, take it from someone who has 7 of these filters therefore has experience.

The only parts that are flimsy are the baskets, but as long as you are careful when removing them they are more than strong enough to do what they are designed to do. The rest of the filter is made of plastic which seems just as strong as ther plastic used on any other external filters I have had experiance with.

Again just my experiance of owning and maintaining one of these filters for around 12 months.

Ok, that's enough for me. I'm going to get 1. Think I'll just go for the 2000lph bad boy and hey, i'll maybe even splash out the extra tenner for the 1 with built in led light :)

Cheers for feedback folks. I'll be ordering it on the 14th (pay day). Can't wait

Lol Livewire, probably because I am too heavy handed :p am the worlds clumsiest person ever! When I was handling it and cleaning it all from scratch, dismantling it and putting it all back together again, I just personally thought the plastic was flimsier that other brands, I found the canister casing was a lot more...hmm... bendy? It was nothing major for sure!! Just little niggly things but enough of them that just made me think I wouldnt ever want one myself!

Like I said... each to their own!!

In fact... was trying to place it... the canister reminded my slightly of the *really* old Rena filters I think?

I have two APS2000EFs on my 48x17x22 (~280l) without any spraybar modules alongside a cheapy Biopro 2000 powerhead/basic mechanical filter, for the benefit of my small riverine fish. To give you some idea, my six Beckford Pencilfish in there are not being blown around out of control and my ~20 mini "Debauwi Catfish" species (P. mandevillei) love it (as do my Dwarf Chain Loaches and Tinanti/Ultraslender Lionhead Cichlids). ;)

I've run one of these on my 48x12x15 (140l) before now and its flow would resemble a flowing stream, suitable for my African Buttfly Fish; Leopard Bushfish; Upside Down Catfish.

They are not bad for the money, but in hindsight I wish I had bought at least one more Fluval FX5 when they could be had at <£140 off Ebay in autumn 2010, their true turnover of ~2300lph and huge cannister is brilliant. In addition, the output is so versitile, you can use the standard double nossle for fish that come from sedate waters or use a 22mm plumping elbow and/or pipe to create an intense current of a custom spraybar.

I have the 2000ef on my 170 litre. I'm very happy with it so far, had it a few months now.
