I’m new to this site, and kinda-sortta new (6 months now) to fish keeping.
I plan on getting a really good - and expensive! - RO/DI filtration unit. I think I saw one that had a 5 step, but I know there’s plenty of 4 step units to get.
Anyhoo... since I’m going to be using pure(ish) water, I know that it’ll lack a lot of important electrolytes for fish. The whole reason I want to purify my water, is I don’t like using chemicals. I wonder if there’s a stress/slime coat formula that’s all-natural. I know a lot of the retail products have aloe vera in them. But there’s also a bunch of chemicals too, and of course all done with those long scientific words.

Maybe even a home-made recipe I could do? Aloe-vera (I’d be using gel from an actual plant! Fanatic? You betcha *g*) and maybe a bit of aquarium salt. I have no idea what else should be in it, though.

Don't even attempt it. Buy r/o additives. Aloe vera isn't a necessary additive, it's used to irritate the fish into producing extra mucus. You're trying to do 2 different things and won't succeed at either, IMO. You'll pay the money for the RO unit, so pay for the additives too.

i understand that you are trying to stay away from chemicls.....something like this i would just use tetra aqua safe or stress coat from aquarium pharmacuticles(sp). these are safe(and should be as they have to be used with every water change) so you wount have to worry about your fish. with trying to make your own u could endager your fish by getting the chemicles wrong or whatever...btw a small bottle of aqua safe(treats 200 something gallons) cost only 3 bucks...at least in my area.....im sure thats alot cheaper than making your own

Cost isn't an issue. I spoil my pets! (even "insignificant" ones like fish)
And yeah, I was worried about mixing my own, in case I got the levels of different things too unbalanced.
When I did a search for all natural products, Aquarium Pharmaceuticals kept coming up... maybe I'll just use that, after all.

Thankies for the replies so far!
I'll still take more advice, if it comes ;)

no prob....probly the reason aquarium pharmacuetales(SP) came up is becuase the make melafix, an all natural antibacterial medication made from tea tree leaves but either way i trust the brand very well along with tetra and hikari
