Hello

I have a problem with algee as you can see below.

Anyone know what would eat this as none of my CUC venture onto the sand. The sand sifter cuts about but makes no big impact.

Thankyou all

Cyanobacteria... Trying to find a good sand-sifter for cyano is nearly impossible. I'd read some of the many posts around here on eradicating cyano. It's a tough one.

We had a bloom of this when we set up our first tank we put it down to nitrates.
We got rid of it with lots of vacking and scrubbing and water changes

If its bacteria will a UV deal with it????

we didn`t have any luck it may stop it spreading as much but didn`t kill it off

No, UV will not kill it as cyanobacteria can grow both free-floating (suceptible to UV filtration) and as a mat on sand, rocks, and other substrates (not suceptible to UV). You could UV your whole tank and sterilize the entire thing, but that's not ideal ;)

So what should i do????????????

Will water changes get rid of it?

Any help as it makes my tank look realy dirty  :-(

I had a good vaccum and the water that syphoned off I binned and put fresh in.

How often should I do this? I remove 25L of a 350L tank.

Cheers

you should remove any cyano as soon as possible, but just removing it will not make it go away, you need to work out what is causing the problem. best place to start is testing for phosphates and nitrates then looking at the best way to keep the levels down.

***EDIT***

and by the way... taking photos without the flash tends to work best ;)

Way more effective to do one BIG change. Does your friend know the TDS of his RO water and/or does he maintain it properly?
