i need an algea eater for my 8 gallon tank, it currently only has 1 small common goldfish in it as my old goldfish sadly died last week, what can i get that wont grow huge? any ideas?

You need a bigger tank is you want anything else with it.
A common when small needs at least 15 gallons and when full grown at around 12 inches need a pond. A 50 gallon might be ok for a few years.
Of course not everyone can afford such huge tanks but 20 gallons with lots of work by you could see you also getting a hillstream loach or two.

If your LFS recommends a weather loach, please DO NOT buy one!!!!!!!! When I was a child we were recommended to get some to put with our goldfish as they were apparantly algae eaters. They may graze on it as juveniles but when they are adult they don't bother. All they did were terrorise the fish and left one of my fantails with hardly any tail  They went back to the shop and the shopkeeper got a real telling off from my mum!!! :D

Algea eaters & goldies don't do together. It can be okay for a bit, but they get more aggressive as they get older, and like to snake on the slime coats of slower moving fish. Afraid you need to get yourself a algae scrubber... :( As far as tank cleaners corys are cool... but if a lot smaller then the goldies, the goldies will attempt to eat them. :( They do not eat algae, but will eat any left-overs at the bottom of the tank... They do nave their own diet needs also tho.
