Has anyone had bad experiences with algae wafers? The local petstore talked me into buying them for my peppered corys. I't says it won't cause algae outbreaks on the package but I'm a little weary!
When I first got some cories I was told by my LFS that they won't survive on algae wafers. They need protein in their food, so make sure you feed them other foods as well as algae. I wouldn't worry about it causing algae though, they're quite a popular food for fish. At worst, you can stop feeding it to them.
I also feed my cory a algae wafer every other day but he does not seem to enjoy the wafers as much as he enjoys the shrimp pellets and frozen mysis shrimp I feed him regularly. You don't need to worry about an algae bloom just a little bit of a mess if he doesn't eat the whole wafer.
As long as you don't over do it, algae wafers are a good food for your fish. The problems come when they are fed as too large a part of the diet and the fish are given too little of other nutritious food. Think of it as if you were eating mostly spinach and seldom got a steak of other vegetables. Your health would eventually suffer no matter how good spinach is for you.
Take care that the algae wafers are completely eaten or break them apart before feeding. Failure to do so will result in a messy tank.
