I recently bought algae wafers to try as someone recommended them and I had never tried them before?
They look quite small in the jar but swell to quite a big size.....my Cory's went bad when they got hold of it just eating and eating.....my morning they were still eating away at it so I removed what was left as I was afraid they might overeat? I don't think they were too happy with me :( Any advice?
Oh.....I tried cucumber and peas...however neither seem to be to my Cory's liking...any other ideas on Veg my Cory's might like? That way I don't have to worry about them overeating....and they might stop eating my plants ;)

I tend to break up my algae wafers in to small bite size bits. My corys seem to only like the middle part of the cucumber, peas shelled and squashed will be eaten also by my corys too.

Hope this helps.

I toss in about 3 or so every other day. What other fish do you have with the corys? I kinda caught the others in the act, my Gourami seems to love them as well as my guppies. True, it took a while till they started nibbleing on them. But the Gourami had already eaten most the leaves off my moneywort. So, just trial and error is the best I can tell you. I too at the start had to scoop out the uneaten parts that had swelled and were kinda icky. Now I toss 3 in before bed time, when I wake in the morning, they are gone.
I think the fish take a little while to recognize them as a food source. Good luck with them.

Ahh, figured I would add a pic of the critters caught in the act.

Mm, you see the reason I am looking for another food source is because the tetra I have eat everything before it hits the bottom as well as the Cory's pellets off the floor....and as friendly and sweet as they are they don't exactly fight back but just let them take it :( so.....I have been looking for something that the tetra might not like....the wafers worked quite well as when it's a big piece they seem to all eat at the same time and this seems to keep the tetra away....if I broke the wafer up this might result in this getting stolen away as well? What do you think? :S

I have not yet tried peas, as I haven't been able to find any instore, but hope to soon :)

Cories are not big vegatable eaters. They go after the algae wafers because the tablet has more then just algae in it. It also as other nutrients the cories like. You might want to try Hikari Sinking Wafers and also Spirilla (sp?) Disk. Cories are constantly looking for food, so if there is food on the bottom, they will find it. How old are your cories? Young cories need lots of nutrition to help them grow up strong.

You could also soak the wafer in a cup of tank water before you drop it in the tank. Feed the tetras the normal flake food and while they are occupied with that, drop the soaked wafer in. The wafer will be soft and break up quicker, allowing the cories to get more food.

Thanks Baracuda.

Yeah...I have found my Cory's do not seem interested in vegetables, but I will continue to try.
Not sure how old they are but I assume they are not too young as I got them from a lfs? How would I know...just by size alone?

I don't think they really need veggies all that much; if they eat the algae wafers from time to time, that should be plenty. Try them on some meaty treats, maybe bloodworm or daphnia once or twice a week. I give mine 3 weekly feed of jellied bloodworm, daphnia or brine shrimp and they mop it up. The platys crowd in with them but the corys seem to get their fair share.

I agree. Live bloodworms are very good for them, but I cant find them around here. The more nutrition you can get them, the better.

i have NEVER had success at ANY of my fish eating algae wafers, but i didn't use the hikiri (sp). i use wardley and they don't like them. i am still trying to feed thwem as i hve a pleco and know that they like them. it probaly will just take time for them to get used to it as being food.

as for he bloodworms. everyonce in a while i'll throw a cube of frozen bloodworms into the tank. well any that make it to the bottom are cory food before anyone knows that they actually hit the bottom. i have seen my female bettas go to the bottom of the tank to get leftovers to find that there is non because the cories ate them all. the cories are well fed, but it's amazing as they love them so much that they disappear in mere seconds.
