Is it possible for algae to grow underneath the sand / gravel? I'm not suspicious, just curious.

I don't think enough light could get under the sand for the algea to thrive...
But if theres algea on your gravel, and the gravel gets "turned over" there would be algea under it...but it would probably die (lack of light) and clog up your filter.

Sometimes you get some algae growth in front of the glass under the sand or gravel but it's usually only a small amount and easy to remove. Elsewhere in the tank I would find it unlikely.

only dead algae, not thriving live algae, except maybe a little around the edges.
