What to do when algae starts growing on your plants?! Is there any way to choke them out?

Green algae usually means that there is either too much light or too much fert in your tank which the algae is using to it's advantage.
You can try shortening the time you have your tank lights on and temporarily stop adding extra ferts (if you have been adding them).

A couple of Otos or other algae eater is always handy when there is algae around! :D

Well I'm not using any fertilizers, so I'll try the light thing. I can't get any algae eaters however, because they are not part of my plan for the tank. :(

What color is the algae? Some algae is natural in a newer tank. Some types can be fixed by increasing your light (power, not time). What power lighting do you have now and how long are the lights on? What is your plan for the tank (and what size) in the end? If you can, test your tank water for phosphates or bring a sample to your LFS and ask them to test it for you. High phosphates can cause some algae problems. This was the case in my tank. If you can, post test levels like nitrates and phosphates and any other tests you have access to.

If you could answer Colin's answer we would be able to help much better..
