ok. i want a good algae eater! the trick here is i dont want the usual SAE or oto. my tank is 45 gallons with silver dollar pictus and danio species.and out of couriosity do rainbow sharks eat algae?

To the best of my knowledge they don't. Well, mine doesn't. How about a couple of bristlenoses?

how about some bristlenoses?.. havn't had any experiences with them. ill do some research on them. thanks :D

Iwould have to suggest acouple of albino sucking loaches, they are doin' me good, when there is algae to be eaten, they are there
nathan

I have an albino bristlenose pleco. He is absolutely the ugliest thing you'd ever want to see. So ugly he is almost cute. He does a good job of keeping the glass clean. I also have some otto and an SAE. The otto are great little guys and they don't take up much room Another option is apple snails. My daughter was having a problem with algae in her tank, after adding a couple of apple snails and rams horn snails the tank is spotless. You cannot put snails in a planted tank though. I also have a bunch of amano shrimp, great little guys. They eat algae and whatever falls to the bottom of the tank. They are really interesting.

do you think the ottos would be safe from my devilish pictus cats?

How big are your pictus cats? If the otos fit into their mouths they'll soon be gone, I fear.

i would have to say 2in-2 1/2in. i think i should play it safe wih something bigger. ive never thought about snails! i guess i have alot more options then i thought. ok so i have SAE bristlenose, snail amano shrimp sucking loaches. ahh the choices

golden apple snails - they do the job and i'd even go as far as to say that they're quite pretty!! ;)

Hi henry here.
I am new in his formus hope you dont mind that I share some of my experience on planted tank with you guy. I have around 10 SAE and otto in my 3 ft tank and they are doing a good job. Howver if you dont like both the fish. Maybe you can try Yamato shrimp or malaya shrimp. From my observation, i find that Yamato shrimp did a better job than malayan shrimp. If you dont like shrimp maybe you also can try thailand rocket or three strip pencil fish. As for apple snail, i have a very bad experience with them. Indeed they did a good job, but they also helping me to pull out some of my mini ricca which i was too shock to see that and i give them alway. But overall i find that otto still the best algae eater than the others.
