Hi :)

Ive got a 560 litre tank that has a medium mixture of fish in.

In the last few day it has developed an extremely bad case of green water.

To try and cure this i have put a phosphate reduction bag in the sump filter and used several bottles of greenaway chemicals to try and drive the algae out.

I have now placed a UV sterliser into the tanks filtering mechanism (i have actually put the steriliser and a separate pump into a separate water circuit so the normal filtration and the steriliser are not connected).

The UV steriliser has been running at optimum flow rate now for 18 hours with no visible change to the level of clouding.

How long should it be before i should expect some results??

Thanking you in advance for any advice you can give.

Hi Ivor, I've got the same size tank and for the past month or 2 I've had the same problem, ( my tank has been up and running for 5 months ) I was doing pwc around 20% a day on average to try and cure it but it never seemed to help. I bought a phosphate test kit and my readings were 2.5 mg/l. So I bought a phos zorb and stopped the water changes, anyway 8 days later my readings are 1.0 mg/l and my tank is crystal clear for the first time in ages. Anyway I hope this helps, let us know how it's looking in about a weeks time.

Using a Diatom filter (you can usually rent these from your LFS for a day or two) will help. In addition replacing your carbon (if you use any) with Seachem Purigen should help as well.
