Hey, I'm looking for some advice on a 2nd hand tank I've bought.

I got a second tank Juwel Rekord 70 tank, and it's in pretty good nick apart from a load of muck or algae trapped between the internal filter and the glass. I feel like I should get rid of it before starting the cycling of the tank.

I've tried removing the filter (I've got some aquarium sealant so can re-attach it), but I'm finding it realllly difficult! Used a Stanley knife, which worked a bit then snapped, and nothing else will fit, it's so tightly attached!

Anyone have any ideas on what I could do?

Thanks

how is it stuck to the glass? i thought all internal filters had suckers for easy removal, has the previous owner done a bit of bad DIY

I agree with phoenix, I thought it should be stuck with suckers, having said that I had a filter that was a long square container type thing that just stood against the glass I'm wondering if it is something like that, but if it is then algae shouldn't have got behind it.

As for the removal, I presume there is no fish in yet so try a razor blade preferably in a proper holder then use a scrubber and give a good rinse out.

most of the juwel internals have been siliconed on,i used a scalpel blade to remove mine from my rio 125,takes time and patience or try along bladed sharp knife.

@scotty, that could be what I had, I bought mine second hand and it probably was removed at some point as it just stood in the corner, that tank was a Juwel, I have since changed it but I still have that filter.

hey yea thats the type, the long black box ones. it just looks really dirty behind the filter, and mine seems to be attached really closely to the glass with silicone, so it's a bit of a pain. I'll try again tonight.

On another note, I'm going to be moving my fish from a smaller tank into this one, could anyone advise me on the best way to do this? If i just put my old filter and ornaments in the new tank, fill it with water and move the fish over (only got 3 small guppies at the moment) do you think the bacteria in the old filter will be enough? Or would you recommend I just cycle the new tank's filter on it's own?

Thanks again for your help

Well in that filter that is in it should hold the media from your old filter but if you are going to remove it then yes put your filter in from the established tank, don't forget to use dechlorinated water when filling it up.
If you do use the media from the old filter in this one it won't take long to get more bacteria established in it and only having 3 Guppies is fine, introduce more fish slowly, not a big pile at once.

really, wow poor design or what, what would happen if the filter broke would you need to replace the whole tank or put a new filter next to the broken one

it's just basically a plastic box filled with media that has a filter pump on the top, which draws the water u through the filter.just a case of replacing the filter pump

ahhh right so if the flter breaks you have to replace it with another jewel one to fit, good marketing ploy

I removed my juwel internal filter with a pallete knife which i sharpened one edge of and it took 20 mins to remove at very most you just have to be careful and take your time with it.
