I have an abundance of hair algea in my tank... What should I do to remove this problem????
Someone told me to get a butterlyfish to eat the algea is this true? What other thngs can I do?
I know phosphates do this as well .. I got an R.O Filter But I wan t to rid this tank of the nasty algae which thus is hair..

alot of butterfly are carnavore's or coralavores it guess you would call it, most won't eat algae. you could get a lettuce sea slug which will eat all types of algae but once it's all gone it usally starves to death :( also get some type of phosphate remover, i have heard the best stuff is rowphos.

first thing, check out this website. hair alagethis will help u out first off. you need to think about some predators of hair algae as well. lettuce nudibranchs work very well, if u have a lot. also sea urchins, sea hares, mexican turbo snails, algae blennys. reason for ur hair algae is high phosphates, so go with #1 advised product on here, ROWAphos. i started using it, and ive been told it works wonders by some of our "pros" on here. so good luck hope this helps :good:

Thanks guys Ill definaaltey look into this..

That is some good information. I got 5 snails coming on Friday. I will try to harvest some tomorrow morning and I will close the shades to keep the sun away. Let see!!!

Good luck on the light-starving methods, I've never seen it work . Rowaphos and a predator are your best bet. How big is your tank and do you employ powerheads? If so do you have plastic inlet strainers for them or inlet foam strainers?

I did harvest some of the algea on my powerhead and on my protein skimmer. I made a water change which lowered the Nitrate by a whole bunch (I think this was my problem) It is now turning brown and making bubbles which from my reading is good because it's dying.

Time will tell.
