It has only been a week since I got them, but the females were full of eggs and the male is fat and sassy, so I went ahead and set up the spawning tank today. The male has vision problems, as I've mentioned before, but he knows the female is in the tank for sure and has been showing off, so hopefully he'll build his own nest. I put two cups in there so he could take his pick, I thought with just one it might be hard for him to find; I'll remove one once he has chosen which to guard. If he doesn't bubblenest, Uriel my VT has volunteered his impressive nesting skills for the task :p. I steal his bubbles whenever I have a male that doesn't nest well.

The tank -- a 5 gallon tub. I usually use 10 gallons, but I figured it would be easier for him to find the female this way. Also didn't put in many hiding places.

Wow, I'm really excited to see how this spawn turns out! I hope your little albino boy gets the job done  I'm sure instinct will kick in.

Would breeding the albino male and female with albino genes cause some more albino related problems.. I guess it would, but you cant have albino without the problems..

I guess that was kinda a stupid question.. opaque albinos.. now that would be satanic.. I'd like to see some pure white fish with red eyes.

No, it shouldn't. Albinism is caused by one recessive gene, so you can't have, like... SUPER albinos from breeding an albino to an albino or anything like that :dunno:. At best, I'll get about 50% albino eggs to start with (some may not hatch, not all will survive to adulthood), and definitely all will be albino geno if I can get them to breed successfully at all. Theoretically, I think I'll be able to tell as soon as they hatch if I have albinos by looking at the eyes, but I might be wrong about that, I don't exactly have a lot of experience with this :look:

Haha, opaque albinos, wouldn't that be something... might be possible too, they DO have that iridescent layer after all, which is what the opaque gene deals with.

I went ahead and released her experimentally since he wasn't really showing much spawning behaviour, and sure enough... just seeing her, he was kinda like "eh, another fish," but after bumping into her it was instantly like "oh, it's a PRETTY LADY fish!!!!"

The problem is that she's almost completely clear, so with his poor vision he can't see her very well, and when he does see her he can't keep sight of her, which results in him flaring and waggling his butt ALL OVER the tank in an effort to impress her, because he has absolutely no idea where she has gone after he catches that initial glimpse of her
Usually she's sitting to the sidelines with this " " look on her face.

The good part is that she thinks he can see her just fine, so she still runs when he comes her way, so I feel comfortable leaving them together. I also divided the tank in half because he obsessively patrols his territory and I was afraid he was going to tire himself out with that much room. He literally never stops. He locates food by touch mostly, so I assume that's why; growing up he would have missed out if he hadn't done that.
