i have a newbie question about airstones, i looked them up and am a little confused...

do airstones just oxygenate the water? are they just for use with under gravel filters? or can/should i use one in the underwater filter in my 5g?

Airstones do oxygenate the water and are used for under gravel filters but there are now lots of different designs that can be used just to airate the water and make bubbles. This link shows a few different types.

Not quite sure what you mean by this. Do you currently have a undergavel filter?

no its just an ordinary submerged filter that came with the tank. this is the one:
