Bettas like a planted tank and floating plants. I have found Airplane plants to be super hardy, super attractive, good root growth, easy to grow and maintain. They also remove a ton of harmful chemicals in the water. I like to get a piece of styrofoam, poke some holes, and set the root just into the water.

When I was a kid, shops would sell them as aquatic plants. They wouldn't last.

Roots in like that though, they do really well. I moved some onto another tank yesterday.

Mine have been in the tank for 6 months and only getting bigger. I root mine in rock then transfer them to the styrofoam so the roots are pretty and white and clean.

That's a good starter trick. I'll use that.

I find they do well if I cut plastic eggcrate from old lighting to bridge the tank, then place the plants on that. Spider plants work well with their size. Pothos, peace lilies, polka dot plants. Monstera, basil, "Chinese evergreen", snake plants, many ferns - it's fun to do. In my old house I had enormous Boston ferns roots in.

A friend does green onions above his tank. I've tried to keep sunlight away from my tanks because of algae.

GaryE, it seems like snake plants would not like moisture all the time. Do you have a special trick for them?

Snake plants make no sense. I have them in the back of Aquackear filters, and several are five times their original size. I was told they'd work, and given some, and I figured neither the plant nor I had anything to lose because they were there, already uprooted. They adjusted immediately and have done well.

Counter intuitive, but real.

Here in the South we call them Mother-in-laws tongue.
