I am setting up a new tank and would like to know if it is worth fitting an air pump

bubbles are nice. i kno m fish like it when they touch them.. but i dont really kno if its needed..

Air stones help with the exchange of O2 and CO2 therefore keep the tank well oxygenated, they are also pretty.

the only real benefit to the heath of the tank is surface agitation, but the filter return will do this more effectively if angled towards the surface.

they're generally used because people like the look of them or under the impression that the bubbles oxygenate the water.

i've noticed that most of the nicer tanks here don't have any, or at least are off for the photos. I was also under the impression that they helped oxygenate the water and that the stones would grow benificial bacteria on them.

Ditto!

My question is ....do they help plant growth in anyway ?

i turned mine down last night after reading this, and i have to admit i like it much better with no or little air flow, and my small bubbles problem is gone. seems that my filter intake was sucking some up, which was not only making excess noise, but pushing small bubbles thru the tank and making it cloudy.
