Hi, my tank is in my room and the airpump is quite noisey at night. I just bought a new one hoping it would be quiter, but its not. Just wondered, does the air pump have to be on 24/7? Or could I switch if off over night - maybe have it on a timer or something?

If your filter ripples the surface of the water well yes you can turn the airstone off, I do as I don't really need the airstone on all the time.
Mainly for the fish to play in the flow lol.

Most people have been known to only have the air pump on during the day, as some do make noise. So yes you could use a timer for your air pump if you would like to.

I know my airpumps make a humming noise and i have them in my room however I have just gotten used to them doing that and now ignore the noise.

If the pump is just for looks, like an airstone, you can turn it off as long as any other filtration causes some surface movement. If it's running your filtration such as ugf, do not turn it off.

A longer piece of air line, and sticking the pump in the closet is the best way of containing the noise.

Do you have a seperate filter? If you do, and if the flow of water from your filter moves the top of the water, then, yes. You can sleep peacefully by switching you air pump off.

Sweet dreams

If you have a heavily planted tank, airpumps must be on at night. This is because of the fact that plants secrete carbon dioxide during the night and take in oxygen. You may be risking suffocating your fish!!

That is why you rely on the filter moving the water. If you've a filter then the pump can go off. The watermoved by the filter will airate your tank.

Cheers for all the info guys.

There are no plants in my tank at the moment and I have adjusted the filter outlet so that it points more towards the surface causing plenty of surface movement.
