After being unable to keep floating plants alive I now have to opposite problem.

For over a year every floating plant I bought for any of my three nano aquariums died, I tried every species I could. My lights started to fail so I gradually replaced the all with similar spec ones and put tonnes of extra plants in the tanks. This introduced duckweed in one of the tanks. For a few months the duckweed was just a dozen leaves lurking at the edge of the tank. In a few weeks it has completely taken off and is now crawling up the sides of the tank. It sticks to everything. Nothing else has changed but there is so much duckweed in the one setup. What do I do? How can I control it? It seems to grow faster then I can remove it?.

One of the many reasons I avoid DW...the only way to stop it from taking over is to remove every single bit of it...which is not easy

I actually had so many issues with floating plants dying that I introduced duckweed several times only for it to die completely. I thought it was indestructible until kept dying, but now it’s back to being indestructible.

I've never had what I could term a "problem" controlling duckweed. Many years ago some duckweed arrived with other plants, and I deliberately introduced the duckweed to my 10g tank which for several years housed a group of spawning pygmy cories. When I shut down the 10g and moved the cories into the 29g, I transferred some duckweed to the 20g. I use this tank as a QT for new fish, so it sits empty of fish most of the time, and the duckweed hangs on (there are other plants and the tank is fertilized weekly). When fish are in the tank, the duckweed improves because of the additional ammonia/ammonium, and it can really take off. But given the benefit of this, I just keep it under control by removing some during the weekly water change, using a small fish net. It gets into the other two tanks periodically by hitchhiking on the water changer, but the next week it is easy enough to net out the few plants of duckweed.

It would probably be dwarf water lettuce. Ive been wanting to order some from you for a while... I have your shop saved. I just cant rn cause I'm leaving on a trip and I dont have the money for it either right now... I used it all on fishing supplies

I have duckweed in multiple tanks as well as several species of floaters. When Duckweed got into my 150g I left it, it grew and covered the entire top in a week. I just took my big net and scooped 97% out, it would grow again and I did the same. Well, the Severum loved it and they ate what I missed and it is now gone in that tank.

My other tanks I simply pluck out the floaters I want (I have to thin them also as they grow aggressively as well) then I net out as much DW as I can. I do not hate it, I can see how it can be a problem, especially when HOB filters are involved.

As far as floating plants are concerned, they like as little surface movement as possible. too much movement will cause the plants to melt, what might look like a leisurely spin about the tank is way too much for many floating plants. Duckweed, well, duckweed is like "Underwater, Don't care! In your filter, Don't care! In the bottom of a bucket with a drop of water in it, Don't care! I am just happy to be here!"
