hi guys,

as title, i want to purchase these fish as ive got really bad algae problems and heard these are the best in the business, wheres the cheapest place to get them? ive got a 5ft tank so how many would i need?

ive just ordered some moss balls which should be arriving today so hopefully these should help aswell?

p.s. im in the UK

There is a difference between a flying fox and a siamese algae eater. Below is a link to a good article describing them (along with a false SAE) and a link to the species profile on them which also explains the differences but without diagrams.

As an algae eater, you would want the true SAE and not the flying fox or false SAE. Having said that, you really need to ID your algae first and figure out what is causing it. If you can prevent the algae, that is the better option instead of buying a fish to combat it. Besides that, different algae eating fish eat different types of algae so it's quite possible that even if you get SAEs, they won't eat the type algae you have.

As far as where to get them, I would try to find them locally even if you have to drive a ways. Because so many times flying foxes and false SAEs are sold as SAEs, I wouldn't trust buying them online for fear of getting the wrong fish.
