African Dwarf Frog Problems

My frog is floating on the surface of the tank and cannot keep itself on bottom. I had two and one died doing the same thing. Will this one die as well or can I do anything to stop it?

20 gal, good quality water, tropical community, temp 82. Now I see it jumping at the surface as if it wants to get out then gets tired and floats around then eventually sinks to the bottom.

Ive seen it take a very small poop but i feed it blood worms. Now it is staying behind the heater at the surface. Sometimes it can stay on the bottom and other times it cant.

What are the actual numerical readings for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

How long has the tank been set up?

Was your tank cycled?

Do you feed anything other than bloodworms? Bloodworms should not be the staple of the frogs diet

How long have you had the frog?

Have you seen it shed recently?

You often won't see it poo - so don't be concerned about that.

Can you describe your tank set up - substrate, decor....pictures of the tank and frog would be immensely helpful.

Iv had the tank for a month its a long tank and I dont know the levels of nitrite. There is a moss ball and another plant along with two fake plants and decoration. I think I have seen it shed, there was stuff coming off the frog about a week ago. I have two bottom feeders two suckers two rosy daniels two mollys and three red tailed fish dont knwo the actual name of them. I feed bloodworms and tropical crisps. I just would like to know if it is different for the frogs to float on the surface alot?

You need to test your water, either going along to your Local Fish Store or by using your own kit (which the vast majority of fishkeepers have, it's a must!).

Once you have these FULL water test results (Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte) then post them up on here and you'll get the answers you're looking for.

Could you also take pictures of your fish so that they can be ID'd. ATM I'm kinda worried that based on your description you might have three red tailed sharks in there!

They are not sharks all my fish are tropical community, they are yellow and black. But is it normal for the frogs to stay at the surface for long periods at a time or is there definatly a problem? Il get back with the results.

With all due respect, how do you know that all your fish are compatible etc if you dont know what most of them are?

I asked all of those questions because, YES, there is a problem in your tank. ADF should not be at the surface for long periods of time.

They are bottom dwellers and shy by nature - they are often not at the surface any longer than it takes to take a breath.
ADF are best in species only tanks because they require specialized care that to be honest, is not being met.

You have a LOT of fish in with them, and you do not even know what types of fish they are. Most fish are not compatible with ADF.



You need to sort out your stocking.

Also, a floating ADF is a clear sign that you have significant water problems. They are extremely sensitive to their environment conditions and this is showing you that there is something wrong.

Also, your frogs should not be fed primarily bloodworms - and they should not be fed fish food at all. They are not fish and have a different digestive system and nutritional needs then fish.
You should be feeding them a quality pellet diet and live worms.
