I really wanted to get an African Butterfly Fish, but my friend recently bought me 3 apollo sharks. I've heard that Butterfly fish are nasty to other surface swimmers. Will these breeds get along?

...

It depends on the surface area of the tank, in a standard tank then it is unlikely they will peacefully co exist but if the tank is fairly large then it should be ok.

How big is the tank?

I kept one of the apollo shark species years ago, Luciosoma trinema. They are spectacular fish. But they do get very large, depending on the species, around 25 cm. They are also schooling fish. You need a very large tank. Check which species you have. Here are a couple:

I kept a group of four in a 200 gallon tank, and they bombed around it, eating pretty much anything, from cichlid pellets to strips of squid. Predatory! They are far too fast for an African butterfly do anything to them, assuming they're not crammed into a 10 gallon tank or something.

Anyway, nice fish, easy to keep, and very hardy.

Cheers,

Neale
