Hi

Have been thinking about buying a second hand 144 litre tank. It has an UG filter. Can anyone adivse me on whether this would be sufficient for a community tank or whether I should think about alternatives. The tank is going to cost about £50, I would need to get a heater and new bulb as well, so need to consider the cost. Could probably fine another £50 - 70.

Many thanks

If you're starting from new then i wouldnt use the undergravel filter, they're bad...
You cant clean them without having to remove everything in the tank as all the muck is trapped underneath them. They are old technology now and as you're starting from scratch i'd recommend you get a new filter, canister or internal, anything other than an undergravel filter

When I converted my 125 gallon from reef to African tank I kept the duo layers of Under Gravel Filter in it's place. Since, I didn't want to buy egg crate in the first place I opted to use them instead. If I were to set up another tank I'd do it over again like the 125.

Since, Vectis didn't mention if you have an air pump or power head or if the tank was glass or acrylic. I would just use what you have (more so if the tank is glass for the buffer in between the rock and the glass).
