I already have a cold water tank with a selection of cold water fish in which i had given,i now want to buy another tank to keep tropical fish, but there are so many to choose from i dont know what size is the best to go for .Does anyone have any advice for an enthusiastic beginner? Also which would be the best fish for me to buy for the tank?

Try and get a reasonably sized tak as it will make it easier to keep in the long run and allows you more choice with fish.

What sort of fish do you like generally? What coldwater ones do you have?

:)

Ihave a 21gall {uk} cold tankwith 2 Black moors
2 bubble eye
2 commets
1 weather loach.
As for the tropical fish i have looked at loads and am not sure which i should get or how many.I keep getting different advice in the shop.
I was thinking about getting a tank about same size as the one i have {21 gall}. Would that size be no good?

I think that would be ok. Coldwater fish need a lot more water per fish that tropicals so you'll be able to have a few fish in a 20UK tank.

Do you like loaches generally? I'd recommend kuhlis for any aquarium and they don't get too big. I think it's good to have a mixture of top/middle/bottom dwellers as I think it means you can have more.

What fish were you looking at in the fish shop for instance? Do you like livebeaers like mollies and gupies? Do you like colourful fish, noctural fish? Many people like corys.

I must addmit i had never seen a loach till i got the tank it was already in,i find it quite fassinating to watch, but i wouldnt say its very pretty.
In the tropical selection i have looked at i like the Angel fish, neon tetra, red tiger barb and the gourami.

Oooh, there are many different kinds of loach that are very colourful and pretty. Although my weather loach is my favourite fish.

I don't think your tank is big enough for angels I am afraid as they get pretty big and need a very high tank to keep them comfortable. Most would advise against keeping neons and angels int he same tank anyway as neons are food for angels in the wild.

Barbs are quite agressive little fish and have a reputation as fin nippers. To minimise this they should be kept in groups of 6+ but this does not need to be all the same kind og barb. This way they are too busy play fighting with each other to bully others. This is the theory but it hasn't worked for me in practise.

I have 2 gouramis and mine are species that get quite big. What kind were you thinking? I know dwarfs are nice but I am not sure how they are with each other, I have heard a specific number should be kept to stop agressive behaviour.

Why not have a look in the members photos section. You might get an idea of the kind of fish you want there and then you can ask about them.

I have pics of my loaches and other fish up there.

Hope This Helps

Thanks for all the advice, i will take a look at the pics and rethink my fish selection.Hopefully one day i will know what im doing, but i expect we all have to start somewhere.
Thanks again
