Hello

Just asking for any advice from dwarf puffer fish owners, who have them in a community tank and how it is going for them.
As i would like to get a dwarf puffer fish but also keep it in a community tank.
If anyone here has dwarf puffer fish with tank mates could you please give me any clues and advice on which fish work well with them or any information on this subject. As i am told by many people different information on these cute little guys.

I was thinking of getting Figure 8 puffer or a Green Puffer if that is any help.

please get back to me asap!

Thank you.

Don't do it. Unless you want the rest of your fish to spend the rest of their lives without fins.

Both need brackish water to do well too.

The two types most commonly refered to as dwarf puffers (Carinotetraodon travancoricus and Carinotetraodon imitator, which are true freshwater species) can sometimes be kept with otos or shrimp successfully, but other than that you're looking at a species only tank.

F8 and Green spotted puffers arent dwarf, both need brackish conditions (green eventually fuill marine!) and are not community fish at all.

thanks for the advice people,

are all puffer fish too aggressive for a community tank then?

because i hear some people say they can work in community tanks just have to make sure the other fish are bigger than the puffer fish and there shouldnt be a problem.

anyone who has tried this please let me know how it went.

and any more info/advice would be great!

thanks

Its really not a good idea to keep a dwarf puffer in a community tank, it doesnt matter if the fish are bigger than the puffers (they are only an inch at full size so most fish would be larger) the puffers will bite away at them one fin at a time.

You do occasionally hear people claiming to be successfully keeping DPs in a community setup, but invariably the puffers are either juvenile or haven't been in the tank long. Once they mature/get settled in they'll go for pretty much anything. The only things that stand a chance of not being harassed are, as I said before, otos and adult shrimp, and even that can be dubious depending on the personalities of the puffers.
