I recently got lucky and obtained a gorgeous double tailed platinum and red male-a rare find in my area. As I have never personally gotten my hands on a DT, I don't know what their swimming habits-if any-are. With this one.. well, let's say I think he died every time I go to look at him. He sits at the top of the water and usually sides up against the tank glass and lays on his side just ..hanging around. I was scared for the first two weeks, but if you get his attention he starts swimming around normally, no labored breathing, seems fine and dandy. Has anybody else found this kind of behavior with their betta? Is it tail type specific behavior (just curious) or could there be something wrong with his bladder?

can he maintain balance in the water or does he struggle to do so? is he bloated? feed him some cooked desheeled chopped up pea and fast him for a day. see if it helps. it also could just be his individual behavior. bettas can be quirky.
cheers

Oh he does fine when he decides to actually swim. I've just never seen a betta rest on it's side and NOT eventually die. All of my other bettas corner themselves and rest with their head near the surface-this guy just takes hardcore naps on his side. I already do a weekly pea/fasting day with all of my bettas. None of the other eight have any problems and five females are in a community tank with one male and some other female fish. They're all very active and don't seem to pick at one another or the other fish in there. I suppose I'll just assume-for now-that this guy takes after me with his sleeping habits!

did you say the 5 females are in a tank with a male betta?? is it sectioned??

sounds like you have a couch potato. my old buy sleeps on a crypt sideways for seeminly hours sometimes. im sure hes fine...just one of his quirks.
agreed that the male in the community with the females should be removed for his own and the girls safety.
cheers
