Well, instead of posting a new topic every time something new and interesting happens to my bettas, I decided to start a journal-type thing to record all the interesting stuff.

First, a short introduction... I am a sophomore college student who recently got back into keeping bettas properly after I started researching a planted tank for my first dorm fish. I have three bettas at the moment- Severus, a weirdly colored pink/peach/heck-if-I-know Halfmoon male; Steel, a young dark-grey-and-red Halfmoon male with metallic silver streaks in his tail; and the newest addition, Shy Guy, a white (but seems to be changing colors a little...) doubletail Halfmoon male.

The pictures of each fish and their tanks:

Severus lives in a medium-planted, filtered, low-tech 5 gallon upstairs. He shares his tank with 3 ghost shrimp (Peeves, the Grey Lady, and the Bloody Baron), and most recently, a pair of Dwarf Frogs (who are as of yet unnamed.) There's been a little nipping and chasing, mostly of the shrimp, but overall everyone seems alright so far. :)

The current plants in the aquarium are Anubias, Crested Java Fern, Micro Sword, and Water Wisteria. The wisteria has grown a LOT since this picture was taken a couple weeks ago- it was actually starting to grow out of the water, so I pinched off the tops and replanted them.

A very out of focus picture of Severus.

Steel lives in a heated, planted 2.5 gallon downstairs.

It currently contains water wisteria and a moss ball. It used to have hornwort, but I got tired of cleaning up fallen needles and moved it to the little critter keeper I have two baby snails (one pond snail, one unknown) in, just for fun. :p The other plants are silk.

A picture of Steel doing his best ostrich impression- you can see the metallic streaks in his tail here. He's very outgoing and active, and ate out of my hands the very first day I brought him home. :)

Shy Guy is the newest addition. He lives in a 1.75 gallon bowl, the largest I could find, with a live Anubias plant.

As his name suggests, SG is very shy- it took him several days to begin eating and you can nearly always find him under his bridge or lurking in his plant. Today during water changes I moved his and Steel's tanks close together- Shy Guy immediately started flaring and going crazy. Steel was like "dude... what are you fussing about?" and utterly unaffected. His fins are curled at the ends, which I'm assuming was from dirty water in his pet store cup. I'm hoping it will clear up with time and clean water.

So, yeah, those are my bettas. I'll post new and interesting things that happen here, and any entertaining pictures I may happen to take. :good:

Lovely!! How do you find your water change schedule with the bowls? DO you need daily 100% to keep the ammonia and nitrites at 0? I used to keep my bettas in bowls and had to do about 90% a day to make sure everything was managed, but eventually I only needed 50% a day as I am sure the bacteria built in the gravel and decor enough.

Well, I don't have a water test kit so I don't know the exact levels, but since SG's fins are messed up I try to do at least a 50% water change every day in his bowl. Today I did a full water change for both Steel and SG, and I took 3 full gallons out of Severus's tank. (Sorry, terrible with percentages). Since they all have live plants in their tanks I think they all do fine. I'm also very careful not to overfeed them and try to keep their gravel/sand clean, to reduce the rotting stuff that contributes a lot of ammonia. :)

Some very lovely fish :) Do you plan to keep SG in the bowl or upgrade him to a larger tank? Steel is such a stunner :good:

Steel is gorgeous. And I'm loving the Harry Potter names by the way

Lovely fish! Maybe you could call your frogs Fred and George?

This has NOT been a fun couple of days.

My internet went out, I'm working really long hours at work... and the frogs, to say the least, did NOT work out.

One frog killed (and ate- I saw him do it!) a shrimp, injured the other frog badly enough for it to die... and killed Severus. I found him stuck to his filter, his fins all torn up. I had noticed he was hiding more than usual and was planning to remove the frog... but it happened too fast. So now I have an evil frog, two shrimp, and no idea what to do with him. :grr: And yes, I've checked his front feet- they are webbed. He is a true Dwarf frog, not a Clawed frog. Just a spectacularly evil one.

The-Frog-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.

(Yes, even as I was crying while burying Severus, I appreciated the irony... And also, the evil frog bit and I think broke the other frog's right foreleg. I put it in a shallow container of water so it could get to the surface to breathe, but it died overnight. I was actually going to call that frog Dumbledore...)

On a brighter note, the morning after Severus died I went to feed Steel and SG and saw that they had both built enormous bubblenests. SG is starting to show some blue coloring on his fins and scales- I'm wondering what his actual colors will settle as now. His fins are also starting to uncurl at the ends.

Thanks for the kind words about Severus. I miss him. Funnily enough, though, the wisteria plant I buried him under is experiencing a huge growth spurt, and looks like it actually might bloom for the very first time soon. ^_^ Sort of a bittersweet ending.

The frogs went back to the store a few days ago. Good riddance. :grr:

Today at petsmart I got a few things- a PH test kit, an ammonia test kit, and a small sponge/air pump-driven filter for Steel's tank. Ammonia in the tank upstairs came up as 0, and the two downstairs barely showed anything before the water change- last one for each was about 3 days ago, I think? Also, I discovered that my tap water has a high PH- it shows up bright blue (8.0, highest on the chart) on the API kit, except in the tank upstairs where I have driftwood, where it is about 7.2.

I have been waiting since Severus passed for the perfect betta- you know the one I'm talking about. The one who looks at you and SCREAMS "Take me home right now!" The one I found was a female betta, at walmart of all places! They just got a new shipment in today, and as I was browsing I came across this pale gold/yellow veiltail (I think? Her tail is very round...) female with perfectly healthy fins, bright eyes, and a happy little swim. Needless to say, she came home with me and is currently exploring her new 5 gallon tank. I'll be sure to get pictures later- she's gorgeous! I've decided to call her Sparky.

Sorry for the delay in pictures, I've been busy lately. :fun:

Here's the best one I've gotten of Sparky so far- she moves so much faster than my guys!
Sparky1.png

She acts differently from my guys, too. She's more active, swims with more "purpose", if that makes any sense, a lot more sharply- she doesn't leisurely swim to a spot and then drift for a few more inches before stopping, she swims and STOPS. =p She's also being very fussy about eating... She's completely ignored pellets. Not like she's too scared to come out and eat, but like she doesn't even recognize the pellets as being food. I'm going to try to find some mosquito larvae and see if the wriggling perks her interest. My guys will love them too.

I've also decided to rescape Steel's tank. It just doesn't look right anymore. I found this lovely little piece of Mopani wood in my local Petland:
smallmopaniwood.jpg

It's soaking in dechlorinated water right now, and I ordered some java moss to put on it today (along with two olive nerite snails, because why not? :p And I have a bit of an algae problem starting upstairs in the 5 gallon...). The plan is to replace the current gravel with more natural-colored gravel left over from my tanks when I was a kid. Then I'll have the wood, with the java moss and maybe a small java fern growing on it, the moss ball, his lantern ornament, and maybe I'll keep the water wisteria in there too- I just love that plant in general. :fun: I'll start scaping when the moss arrives (should be shipped out this Saturday- I ordered from Bob's Aquatic Plants) and I'll be sure to post pics when it's finished!

The mosquito larvae were a roaring success. Steel and SG had four apiece and were still begging for more, and Sparky ate like, 6. :hyper: She hasn't eaten since I got her, so I'm glad she ate so much. And I'm glad to have found a free treat for my babies! :good:

The moss and snails were shipped out today- the seller ran out of java moss, though, so they sent willow moss instead. :)

I got impatient and rescaped Steel's tank yesterday. I like the way it turned out! If any of you have ideas of low-light live plants that would look similar to the silk plants and not outgrow a 2.5 gallon, that would be awesome. I love live plants. :good:

The sharp-eyed of you might notice the filter is missing... That's because we had quite a scare today!

The intake part of my filter was too long for my tank- I had to hollow out the gravel to make it fit. So I cut off a bottom piece of the filter and sealed it again with aquarium silicon. It's curing now, and I thought the bacteria in the filter (which is still in the process of cycling) would be fine for 48 hours with no flow as long as they were wet. Well... I was wrong. I noticed that Steel wasn't acting right a few hours ago, hanging out near the bottom with his fins clamped and not coming up to say hi like he normally does. So I got worried and tested the water for ammonia- Holy Heck! The reading was 1.0 ppm! Needless to say, a 100% water change immediately followed. He perked up as soon as the water was changed. My theory is that the bacteria in the filter died, causing a huge ammonia spike. I'm just letting the filter dry out now since the cycle was just beginning.

I changed the water just yesterday, and I tested SG's water too- it was 0 ppm ammonia. So there was something going on other than the normal fish waste ammonia. I'll be keeping a close eye on Steel for quite a while.

Sparkiy is beautiful! For the rescape, you should get a small light, that would help with plants.

Thanks! I thought she was very pretty for "just" a Walmart fish! :D

I've thought about getting a light for the tank, but at the moment I only have one wall outlet available and that's taken up with the filter. A power strip isn't an option, his tank is in the middle of the kitchen and my mom wouldn't like all the extra cords laying around. I like having them in the kitchen and would hate to move them- they get lots of attention there, it's easy to do water changes, and they love having little bits of whatever we're having for dinner. Last night they ate leftover grilled zucchini (stuck it on a toothpick into their tanks, removed it after they'd each had a good few bites and lost interest), and they both go wild for boiled chicken. :p
