I use a 4 gallon buckets but I just say its 5 gallons to do water changes. I aways turn my filters and heater off when doing water changes once im done however many buckets I put in I times that by five and thats how much conditioner I put in. Well the other day I got to thinking and thought maybe I should add the conditioner to the buckets before I put the water in. I dont like that method at all is it all right to wait and put the conditioner in the tank all at once when I'm done before I turn the filters back on. Also is it ok to take a little glass of water and put it in there stir itt up then add it to the tank. I just dont want it hitting the fish as its sinking. Thanks to all that reply.

You should be adding the conditioner to the water before it goes in to the tank. But I know some people don't do that for various reasons, so if you add the water then treat, you should be dosing for the entire tank volume not just what you added. I have seen that said several times on the forum but not really sure what the rational is for that, hopefully one of the more experienced people will be able to explain the exact reason why.

I can see the reasoning behind that but I figured if you waited yeah theres more water but theres still the same amount of chlorine in the water that you just added.

I know what you mean, and that is what I always thought too. Yeah there is more water volume but not more chlorine, so I really don't know what the rational is. But I know I have seen it posted that you have to dose the entire tank volume if you add the tap water direct to the tank, on this forum and several others. But like I said the rational eludes me, it just doesn't seem to make sense but I am sure there is a reason for it. I am sure it has something to do with the greater volume, but can't say exactly what that is.

if you dont have the amount of conditioner for the whole tank then it probably wont be spread out enough to get all the chlorine, plus chlorine kills the beneficial bacteria and thats something you cant have happen, i add the conditioner to the bucket, because then it mixes properly and i dont have to worry about killing bacteria

So if I add the proper amount for the amount in the bucket can I then carry it straight to the tank and pour it in or do I have to wait for it to take affect

well if you put it in before the water then when you put the water in it will mix by itself, so yeah, you can just dump it in, or at least thats what i do

Ok thanks thats a good idea I was putting it in after the buckets was with a little half teaspoon cause thats the amount I need for 5 gallons then trying to stir it real quick. But when I went back for the second bucket when it started filling I noticed I didnt get it all cause the water would bubble up geting the rest of it that settled on the bottom of the bucket.
