adding Piranas

im thinking of adding a small pair of Pirana Fish to my mostly cichlid aquarium.
need your advice before i go ahead.

here are the list of fish that inhabit my tank as now:

1 pair blood parrot fish
1 pair gold severum
1 pair convict cichilid
1 silver dollar
5 pair tiger barbs
1 Yellow Cichlid (kind of Acara but yellow with a black striped fin)
1 female Auratus / Lake Malawi Golden cichlid
1 apple snail


also kindly suggest what other fish could do well in this kind of community. im thinking of adding a venus cichlid as well. do advice

Not recommended. Piranhas are species only fish.
Have a read of a book by David M Schleser entitled Pirhanhas.
If you go to the library it will be in Barrons educational series ISBN 0-8120-9916-8

um arent silver dollars meant to be in small schools?

Indeed, they are
Before you add any more fish, I recommend buying at least 4 more silver dollars because they do live in small schools. It will not only be better for the fish, but seeing as they're shy fish already, you'll probably see more of them when you've got a small school

As I said earlier in a different thread, I'm not here to debate people's choice of fish and to tell them what they should have, unless the question has been specifically asked. I hope people who want to be fishkeepers would have done some homework before their purchase and not bought on impulse.

How big is this tank so far, it should be around the 100g mark, you could add some none-agressive P's as long as you can upgrade to a 200g or so.

And also, say good bye to your tiger barbs. If the P's dont get them the blood parrot will.

As said pirahna are really only suitable for a species tank, at some point the pirahna will eat any other fish in the tank, they even eat each other if any form of weakness is shown. Also pirahna are actually quite shy and delicate, they require the tank to be set out differently to that of normal fish with subdued lighting and pleanty of cover in the form of plants and wood roots/stumps to make them feel comfortable.

mine's a 80 gallon tank!

will get a cpl more silver dollars. do u think that if i get smaller ones, the'l mingle in with the single larger one that i already have?

and yes, no pirans ofr my tank! anything else i can add maybe?

i wouldnt add much more to ur tank it seems kinda full as it is jus 2 or 3 more siler dollers.
