I need to put a new tank on the bottom of my 10g wrought iron stand. Now the problem is I have a tank on the top of the stand full of water. Its my water change day so I want to add the new one today.
If I drain most all of the water out, leaving the rocks good and wet (about 90% change) will it affect the bacterias too much? The tank now has about 50 baby guppys in it, but I can move them to my adult gup tank for a few hours.
Will that much new water hurt the babies?
i'm figuring about 15 minutes to move the top tank, tear apart the top tank support, add the new tank, and bolt it back together, put the tank back and fill it with water.

See any problems?
Oh, im thinking of putting the babies in a breeding net thing for ease of transfering them around.

Why do you need to take the top tank down in order to put a tank on the bottom rack??

Most wrought iron stands are made so the bottom one should slip right in. You may have to start by putting the new ten gallon in on an angle, but should be able to set it straighten it out.

If your able to slip it in, I would drain 50% of the top tanks water into the new bottom tank and then fill both tanks up!

This way you have aged water in the new tank!!

Let us know how it goes.

I tried to jam it in there the other day but couldnt get it to fit. It went in diagonally but it wouldnt go down flat. I was going to drain the water into buckets and use it in the new tank. That way, I shouldnt lose any babies either. they would just go for a ride :)
I'll try again before tearing the whole thing apart to put it in.

Thanks for the fast reply :)

Ok try this.....

Drain 2/3rds of the water into buckets leaving the fish in the tank (if possible)

nexy, very carefully start moving the stand, tank ect... away from the wall just enough to get the new tank behind and onto the stand and then slowly put the whole thing back into place.

I know a lot of people say don't move a tank with water init, but I do it this way a lot!!

After everything is back in place, pour the water into the tanks and your good to go!!
