would it be worth adding a Spry bar to a Fluval 405 to replace the exhaust type head on it now? Planted tank

also I just removed the carb from the boxes what should I replace it with. I got 4 empty boxes which could be used as media? then 2 spare if i need to use carb again

I've got a 305 in my planted tank and just turned the exhaust head to face the glass more to break up the flow, did the trick without having to spend any more cash :)

I think you've an extra tray in yours (8 compartments total?). I've got 3 compartments with biomax media in the bottom 2 trays with 1 compartment empty for carbon if ever i need it and the top tray has polywool in both sides.

The biomax gives bacteria a huge surface area to grow on so its biological filtration

Is it the main media or is the huge sponge the main media? bit confused lol

also you can buy Fluval Pre-Filter Media and Fluval BioMax which look the same to me? Which one came free with the fliter?

I got 4 trays of rings and 4 carbon sacks?

Seems fluval use the sponge as the mechanical filtration to get all the large crap out of the water, then the biomax for the bacterial filtration and then whatever you want.

I do find that polywool works very well in maintaining nice clear water :)

thanks mate been great help

So am going to get biomax fill one compartment and leave the other in case I need carbon Then polywool in the top try.

So it goes

Bottom tray biomax Both compartments
Second Tray Biomax with one empty tray for carbon when needed
Third Tray biomax Both compartments
Top Tray Both compartments polywool

Does that sound right or change the order with the tray for carbon

Sounds fine.

One thing to note is that polywool does tend to 'bung up' quite quickly so keep an eye on the flow rate from the filter
